Sony to Develop PlayStation Phone for Geeks Sony Computer Entertainment is likely to join with Sony Ericsson to construct world's first PlayStation Phone combining the power of a gaming console with that of a mobile phone. Sony is likely to astonish the world by introducing a ‘Playstation Phone', raising concerns for Google and Apple. A senior official of the Sony stated that the company is working on the idea to develop a ‘Playstation Phone' that will integrate the features of a gaming comfort with that of a mobile phone, reported the Economic Times. Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) Europe's Chief Operating Officer, Jim Ryan, on November 21, 2007 said that the news of the creation of a PlayStation Phone by Sony Ericsson and Sony Computer Entertainment is certainly credible. Ryan said that such a gadget would principally function as a games device, with the functionality of phone superimposed, in comparison to a camera phone where the camera functionality is enclosed on the top of the phone. Ryan further added that although the Walkman and Cybershot were the superior selling brands from the Sony offerings, but the PlayStation and Sony Ericsson are likely to create a great achievement story for the Japanese company. The device may well be a revelation for the beleaguered giant of consumer electronics when it is launched in the market, while providing it an exclusive product to offer to the rapidly growing segments, namely mobile telephony and gaming. The analysts remain apprehensive about the success of the vision of a gaming device merged with a phone but they believe the brand of PlayStation would assist the consumer's acceptance to a great extent. An expert from the industry stated that Sony needs to move ahead with utmost precision considering the unsuccessful repetitive endeavor of Nokia to amalgamate the experience of a cell phone and console gaming with its Nokia Engage series, reported the Economic Times on November 20, 2007. This is not for the first time that Sony has mentioned the probability of a PlayStation Phone. The President of Sony Ericsson, Miles Flint, has been alluding it since long time. Also, a patent for the PlayStation Phone has been filed earlier, however, patents filed for such appliances never come into real existence. Meanwhile, SCE Europe's CEO, David Reeves, has refused the proposal regarding the development of a PSP Phone. |
